Beethoven

Beethoven is esteemed as one of the greatest composers in the history of music.Beethoven's hearing loss did not affect his ability to compose music. As an interesting side note, he used a special rod attached to the soundboard on a piano that he could bite, the vibrations would then transfer from the piano to his jaw to increase his perception of sound. A large collection of his hearing aids such as special ear horns can be viewed at the Beethoven House Museum in Bonn, Germany.

The Beethoven Orchestra

The Beethoven Orchestra of is one of the most important "ambassadors" of Bonn's culture, meanwhile successfully promoting the city’s musical image abroad. The orchestra with its 106 members counts among the best ones in Germany. It contributes in an important way to the artistic success of the Beethoven Festivals, which have taken place since 1927.

Beethoven Festival Bonn

With over fifty concerts each year performed by top international orchestras, eminent ensembles, prominent soloists and promising young artists, plus the fact that it lasts for nearly four weeks during September and October, the Beethovenfest Bonn has developed into a big musical event attracting interest far beyond the Rhineland. A feature of the festival, which takes place in Bonn and at charming venues in the surrounding area, is the way in which it compares and contrasts the work of Beethoven and the music of his time with that of subsequent centuries and the present. The festival focuses each year on a different European country with its musical and cultural history.
The Beethovenfest also dedicates itself with great success to educational projects for children and young people and seeks to network with the many cultural institutions in the city of Bonn. The Artists in Residence scheme presents musicians who specialise in Beethoven’s work in particular. The festival’s own concert and stage productions focus on new means of artistic communication. In addition, the Beethovenfest Bonn commissions works every year.

The tradition of the Beethovenfest in Bonn goes back to the year 1845, when a three-day long music festival to dedicate the Beethoven monument took place in the Münsterplatz on the occasion of the composer’s 75th birthday.

The Beethoven Festival 2007 will take place from 24 August to 23 September.
